Pinoy workers in China face possible arrest
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has warned overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) against sneaking into China.
“The Chinese government is cracking down on illegal foreign workers, including undocumented Filipinos working as teachers and housemaids,” the POEA reported. There is a demand for teachers in China but not all schools are allowed to hire foreign workers, POEA said. “China prohibits foreign nationals from doing manual labor such as those of nannies and domestic helpers, and a foreigner has to hold a working visa in order to work there,” it stressed. POEA reiterated the warning after receiving reports that several undocumented OFWs in China have been arrested while many want to return home to avoid possible arrest. POEA admits it has no data on the number of undocumented Filipino workers in China, but labor officials estimate that the figure could be over a hundred.
